04-08-Article Phoenix Says New Movie Isn't About Iraq FROM HERE

BOSTON - America might be at war, but Joaquin Phoenix doesn't think his latest movie, "Buffalo Soldiers," has anything to do with the conflict in Iraq

"When I first read this script, I wasn't thinking this is a critique of the U.S. military. I don't really think the movie is critical of anything," Phoenix told the Boston Globe on Sunday.

"Buffalo Soldiers" stars Phoenix as Ray Elwood, a battalion supply clerk stationed in Germany at the close of the Cold War. He runs every racket at the base, from black-marketing Mop & Glo to cooking dope.

The movie, by director and writer Gregor Jordan and adapted from the 1992 Robert O'Connor novel, opens Friday.

"It's more of a statement film and kind of a cynical statement at that. It explores the idea that war is inherent in man, and there's a seeming desire for conflict. It could be applied to any situation and any military," Phoenix said

Mel Gibson and his movie family, the Hesses, ate pizza at the shop on State Street, and Longosky said people drop in to see the aluminum foil hats or sit in the seats that Gibson and Joaquin Phoenix sat in.

"I've had people take a picture of just the chair," said her husband, Tim, who helps run the shop.

27-07-I got an e-mail from someone who has been to the premiere of Buffalo Soldiers in NY, thanks for that :)

I went to the Buffalo Soldiers premiere on Monday July 23. That statement from the New York news paper was false. Joaquin and his girlfriend came in separate limos and were hugging with the occasional kiss. Also she looks nothing like Rain. Please don't believe the media. All in all it was a great evening and a great movie

*FROM HERE

JOAQUIN PHOENIX AVOIDS SISTERLY LOVE
Quirky actor Joaquin Phoenix stunned onlookers at the Monday premiere
of his movie "Buffalo Soldiers" by passionately kissing a girl who
was mistaken for his sister Rain. The "Gladiator" actor was on the red carpet at Loews Orpheum in New York when he grabbed the mystery girl. It tunred out to be Joaquin's new girlfriend, South African TOPAZ. Joaquin gushed, "Her name is also my birthstone"

That is so sweet that he also knows that :) & still don't see the resemblance between Topaz & Rain

Joaquin and ... his sister?

Joaquin Phoenix fans nearly fainted when the actor showed up for the New York premiere of his latest film, "Buffalo Soldier," and proceeded to make out with a girl who looked disturbingly like his sister Rain. An eyewitness told the New York Post, "Everyone was grossed out and thought he was pulling an Angelina Jolie." They later found out the Rain look-alike is Joaquin's new girlfriend. Still, that's creepy, wouldn't you say?

I don't know think that Topaz looks like Rain in anyway, but even wireimage made he mistake: lol

*Interview Toronto Star about Joaquin HERE, where they say something about his tattoo

He rolls up his pant leg to display a tattoo on his ankle: a sneering bee wielding an ax, the symbol of the Baltimore firetruck company that Phoenix hung out with co-starring with John Travolta in Ladder 49, which is due in November.

He says he can connect with firefighters' sense of isolation.

*LESSONS IN THE ART OF KISSING FROM MASTERS

AMONG Miramax's 300 upcoming films is "Buffalo Soldiers" (opening tomorrow) in which Anna Paquin and Joaquin Phoenix seriously kiss on a noisy dance floor. Not screendom's greatest smooch, but for sure the longest. There's also a damp love scene in a swimming pool, which requires her character to jump off a high dive. Anna, terrified of heights, used a double. And did she use a double for the kissing scene? No. She actually got trained from sexual blackbelts Sarah Jessica Parker and Kim Cattrall. Ahhh, one hears strains of that tender love song, "I've got the son in the morning and the father at night . . . ." FROM HERE

*'BUFFALO SOLDIERS'
This dark service comedy-set on a U.S. military base in Stuttgart, West Germany, as the wall is tumbling in Berlin-should be funnier, but it has a nonchalant glitter and an unshakably cynical attitude. Australian director Gregor Jordan's jaunty mish-M*A*S*H depicts a demoralized peacetime army commanded by fools with the wryly self-contained Joaquin Phoenix playing a cool, smack-dealing Sgt. Bilko. Originally set to open in the fall of 2001, Buffalo Soldiers was understandably delayed-now, with another U.S. occupation rapidly souring, it feels almost avant-garde. OPENS FRIDAY, Angelika Film Center, 18 West Houston Street, 212-995-2000. (Hoberman)

22-07-Finally some news woohoo

I bought the Hotdog Magazine today, you can read the article HERE also a little piece of Buffalo Soldiers in it

Buffalo Soldiers

Where is the beef?

What's it about? Joaquin Phoenix smirks a lot as rebel Ray Elwood, enfant terrible of a German US Army base in 1989. Oh, and how the wall came a- tumblin' down....

Buffalo Soldiers got canned after 11 September, and it's not hard to see why. Seeing soldiers dealing smack,  selling weapons to gangsters and indulging in those three american virtues of boredom, consumerism and waste is hardly a gee-up for Joe Public just before a war. Jordan dispenses with any real narrative, his camera just hangs around the base, observing Elwood's romance with Robyn Lee (an under-used Anna PAquin), his struggles with her father, his relationship with his colonel (Harris) and the dumb shenanigans that frustrated grunts get up to. But despite its cool cynicism and great turns from Phoenix and HArris, this is missing something. It's stuck halfway between Stripes and M*A*S*H, and never quite succeeds as straight comedy or satire. One thing it does have, though: balls

19-07-FROM HERE

Just why Buffalo Soldiers went out of shot of distribution since I saw it a couple of years ago I don’t know. That it died in America I have no doubt since, at the time of the Iraq crisis, it mauled the military in comic ways I have not seen since the film (not the TV series) of M.A.S.H. Bilko has never seemed so sinister. Joaquin Phoenix is Ray Elwood, the battalion secretary of a unit in West Germany, who is making a mint by refining and selling dope, but who wants to graduate to selling weapons of mass destruction. Sharp, cruel, briskly directed by Gregor Jordan, it’s as bracing as a tonic of venom. And it’s that lethal effect which has affected its box-office in the U.S.
