While awaiting death or a last-minute rescue his character looks back over his heroic career and personal life. The actor starred in Signs with Mel Gibson and upcoming drama Aurora Island and sci-fi romance It's All About Love. After 9/11 the fireman has become one of Hollywood's favourite heroes.

A BLISTERING DAY IN PHOENIX
Joaquin Phoenix has agreed to take a cue from his surname and rise from the ashes.
The one-time Leaf Phoenix will play a firefighter who reflects upon life as he awaits rescue in a burning building that he was sent to fight. Kind of like a PG version of The Salton Sea.
Titled Ladder 49 and developed by Disney, the film will be directed by Jay Russell, the man that brought us the surprisingly good My Dog Skip and the only-if-she-begs Tuck Everlasting.
Phoenix, who was last seen swinging away in the methodical alien feast Signs, will next be seen opposite the unenthusiastic Kim Basinger in the drama Aurora Island in early 2003.

After playing second-fiddle too well for too long, Joaquin Phoenix
looks to have finally scrambled up a rung to become Hollywood's next
leading man in new film, Ladder 49. With flick-stealing performances
in both Gladiator and Signs under the none-too-small noses of
topliners Russell Crowe and Mel Gibson, Phoenix has ensured his time
has well and truly come.
And what a change from Gladiator 's wonderfully oily Emperor Commodus
or Signs' slightly-less-than-quick baseball star, Merrill. Joaquin is
in negotiations to come over all gallant and brave as Hollywood's
latest favourite hero figure, the fire-fighter. OK, Kurt Russell did a
passable job in 1991's Backdraft and Dennis Quaid made a brave stab at
the old climbing out of windows with a fair damsel over the shoulder
shtick in 2000's Frequency, but Arnie made a complete hash of it as
vengeful fire-fighter in last year's controversial but cruddy
Collateral Damage. It's now Joaquin's turn to pull on that mask, strap
an oxygen tank to his back and show us what he can do. Ladder 49 will
see him play a veteran fireman trapped in a burning building who
understandably gets all nostalgic over his past professional life, his
heroic career and family, as he awaits either a last-minute rescue or
getting fried to a crisp.
It being a Walt Disney film an' all, our money's on a happy ending.

is really nice guy. We don't know best guy than(beyond) him.
He hate to be late everwhere.
Joaquin brougt his guiter in Japan and he was always playing a guiter
and piano(The Beatle's songs) in hotel
room. He play a guiter in his band which is made by him and his
friends.
He also drunk a little bit Sake(Japanese Alcohol) but not a lot of
Alcohol.
He bought a Japanese soccer team uniform for his 5 years old nephew
and also bought kimono and Ashtrays.
He said He postrecorded animation movie between another movies.
He and Casey have been close friends since they met at "To die
for" set in
1995. He and Mark Wharl also have been friends since they met
at "the yards set" in 1998. He respects director Gus Van
Sant.
He was very suprised, when he saw his hotel
room in Tokyo. Because
The room was bigger than his apartment room.
(There were a big piano. so He played the piano.)
