Peace isn’t the word with studiosWith Ashley Pearson MSNBC

May 15 —  The war in Iraq is over, but it’s still a tough time to be pro-peace. Miramax is learning that the hard way. The film company is releasing “Buffalo Soldiers,” a dark Cold War-era comedy starring Joaquin Phoenix as a wheeler-dealer soldier. Miramax printed up posters for the film that showed Phoenix flashing a peace sign under the tag line, “Steal all you can steal.”

“THE POSTER is clearly intended to be satirical, but a number of people have objected to Phoenix’s flashing the peace sign, which is being interpreted as a decidedly anti-war gesture,” says a source close to Miramax. People are also objecting to “the tagline’s insinuation that some solders’ ultimate cause may be less patriotic than ridding the world of Saddam Hussein.” As a result, says the insider, Miramax is considering trashing the poster and printing up new, less controversial ones in time for the film’s July 25 opening. The flap mirrors one faced by Warner Bros., which altered a poster for “What A Girl Wants” that showed Amanda Bynes flashing a peace sign.

Play it again, and again, and again....

And to think they were worried about Amanda Bynes giving the peace sign: The "M*A*S*H"-like military satire "Buffalo Soldiers," slated for a May 9 release, has again been delayed over concerns that it might be offensive in these rah-rah times--even though the film is actually set in 1989 and has nothing to do with the current world situation. But the poster alone--Joaquin Phoenix is wearing camouflage fatigues, has an ammunition belt wrapped around his neck, and is waving the peace sign as he stands in front of an American flag with dollar signs where the stripes should be, and the tagline reads: "Steal All That You Can Steal"--would have been enough to give Rush Limbaugh a week's worth of material.

28-04-Phoenix set to Cash in FROM HERE

By LOUIS B. HOBSON -- Calgary Sun

HOLLYWOOD -- Playing music legend Johnny Cash would be a tall order for any actor.

Director James Mangold believes Joaquin Phoenix is up to the task with or without lifts in his shoes. Even at 71, Cash is an impressive 6-ft.-1. On a good day, Phoenix is 5-ft.-7. "Joaquin is such an incredible actor, he can play anything including height, which is no issue for the film," says Mangold, who has been developing the Johnny Cash movie with his wife and producing partner Cathy Konrad. "Joaquin and Johnny share a kind of James Dean aura. They are these enigmatic rebel figures. "Our movie stops in 1968 when Johnny marries June Carter, so this is the early years of The Man in Black." Reese Witherspoon has been signed to play Carter. "This is the beginning of what is still a beautiful love story. Johnny is married to the same woman. They live in the same home they did in 1968 and they are both still making music." Mangold says both Cash and Carter have given the project their blessing. "I have 36 tapes of interviews with Johnny and June, so we feel we'll have the spirit as well as the facts of their story." Mangold hopes to begin prepping the movie in the fall and begin shooting early in 2004.

23-04-Remember the artcile about Joaquin in the Russian magazine 7 Days that Vic (River Phoenix Russian Web Site)has scanned in, you can see the magazine 7 Days HERE. She translated (thanks for that Vic :)) the title, the article topics & the introduction of the article

The Title"Joaquin Phoenix: been restored to life" or "Joaquin Phoenix: revived"

The article topics (red lines) are: - World without River - River - World without Liv - Phoenix's world

Joaquin Phoenix, 28, is known as the brightest actor of his generation. In Gladiator his severe and weak at the same time emperor Commodus makes us from time to time forget about the character portrayed by Russell Crowe. Joaquin is gloomy and charming, unpretentious in a life and devilishly attractive on a screen. The best directors dream to get him in their movies. But a little bit of people knows that it could be not to happen at all. Almost 10 years before, when his older brother had died, young actor has sworn not to be in a movie any more...

FROM HERE Robert Patrick Official Site Interview for April:

**The actors went through drills and simulations and fought a number
of controlled burn, but Robert was privy to one real fire. He and two
of his co-stars, Joaquin Phoenix and Balthazar Getty, got a call
while they were in wardrobe one night. "Joaquin drove like he was
driving one of the fire trucks," Robert jokes. Despite the rush, by
the time they arrived, the fire was nearly put out.

**Lauracap:
From what I have read, real firefighters are hoping to be accurately
depicted in this movie. Based on the script, do you think
firefighters will embrace this movie when it premieres?Robert:
Joaquin Phoenix is a Baltimore City Fire Fighter for real. He's been
training since January. He set the bar high for us actors to catch up
with him. When your lead actor puts that much effort into his
training and research for a film, everyone has to embrace that and
join him. And we all have. We're trying to make it as technically
correct of a film as we can, that even the fire fighters will
acknowledge as authentic. But as usual with films, there will be some
concessions made to tell the story in 90 minutes. I'm sure there will
be some things that seem like short cuts, but we're trying to make it
as authentic as we can.

*Thanks to KIKI from Joaqrophenia

Joaquin will sing in Walk the Line

Forget the Men in Black. This time it's about the Man in Black. Plans
are proceeding for a big-screen biopic on the life of Johnny Cash.
Producer Cathy Konrad tells GLARE, "We're putting the final touches
on the script, and Joaquin Phoenix will play Johnny Cash, with Reese
Witherspoon as June Carter Cash. Joaquin will do his own singing, and
he sounds great."

Konrad's husband, James Mangold ("Copland"), will direct. "Like June,
Reese is the consummate artist, but also very serious when it comes
to taking care of her family," he says.

The project has the full support of the Cash family. "Johnny's really
good," Konrad says. "He has been ill with diabetes and in and out of
the hospital, but nothing stops this man. He's so inspirational."

*Buffalo Soldiers FROM HERE

One definite casualty of the current conflict is the military feature Buffalo Soldier. On Monday, Miramax postponed the dark comedy's release for a fifth time, citing concerns that the movie's subject matter would be about as welcome as Maines appearing at a Republican pep rally (in effigy, maybe). At issue is the movie's portrayal of a group of U.S. soldiers, as drug-dealing deadbeats and psychos, stationed in Germany just before the fall of the Berlin Wall. The movie debuted at the Toronto Film Festival just days before September 11, which then effectively court-martialed the Joaquin Phoenix flick. Test screenings in New York in January and December 2002 and an appearance at this year's Sundance Film Festival have done little to help the studio conquer its release jitters (an audience member reportedly tossed a bottle at the director's head at the screening in Park City). War in Iraq only served to sidetrack the film further. Just this year, the movie has moved from March to May to July 25 on Miramax's slate. "We don't want this film to be misinterpreted, and we want to be sensitive to the current situation in the world," Miramax's CEO Rick Sands told the Los Angeles Times on Monday. Barring any geo-political conflicts, terrorist attacks or angry army supporters, audiences in New York and Los Angeles will be able to catch the feature this summer.

It said in a Danish newspaper that Joaquin Phoenix was in an
accident.

It said, "John Travolta got rescued just before it was too late. He
got caught in a flaming building, where he practised as a fireman for
his new movie character.

The movie hero Travolta wasn't alone though. With him he had the
actor Joaquin Phoenix. The two gentlemen will play side by side in
the movie 'Ladder 49.' But during the practise the movie turned into
reality.

Luckily two real firemen worked their way through the fire and
rescued the two unlucky heroes."

"There are no other firemen pictures being done," he says, "and this is such a good drama and such a well-written homage to them. I don't have the main part, Joaquin has that, but I wanted to be a part of it. I wanted to tip my hat to the firemen. Normally, I would have the lead role, but this time I didn't care."

1. I was in a cab in Ft. Lauderdale for vacation last week and the
driver said he had had Joanquin Phoenix in his cab recently. He drove him
from Ft. Lauderdale to Miami to see a friend he hasn't seen in a
while. Cab driver said he was very very nice and humble when the
driver raved about Gladiator. Nothing too exciting, but it's
somethin' :)

2. Thats pretty cool, thanks for sharing :-)
I saw him at LAX once and he was very quiet, laid-back and polite.
None of that "hey look at me trying to avoid attention" star
behavior with the dark glasses and hovering assistants. Blended in
with the crowd and handled his own ticket problems (he was ahead of
me in line in UAL's lounge) with very un-diva-like patience. Seemed
like a sweetie!
