More about Joaquin sighting in NY

Sheryl and her friend Kimmy showed up about 5:45. We enter the place
and get a somewhat good spot as Desaparecidos comes out. They rock
and roll and then rock and roll some more. Guitar smashing. I
seriously thought that Conor had accidentally hit someone in the head
with his guitar - they were smashing so close to each other. Eek.

Next up was The Good Life. They were okay. Eh. Now It's Overhead. I
enjoyed them. The man in drag. Azure Ray. Also enjoyable. Man in drag
sans wig. Pretty, pretty hair. I really had to go to the bathroom,
and I felt it would only get more difficult to get closer to the
front, so I went. On the way back, I passed a good-looking man in a
white t-shirt and jeans. He was smoking a cigarette, and he looked
very suave. I glanced at him until I realized it was Joaquin Phoenix.
Ohh sexiness.

Press release
05.12.2002

The Danish Film Institute (DFI) takes pleasure in announcing that the Sundance Film Festival in Utah has selected five Danish films to participate in this winter's festival, to take place 16 – 26 January 2003. The five films will compete in the programmes World Cinema and Premieres.

Thomas Vinterberg's feature film “It's All About Love", produced by Birgitte Hald of Nimbus, will be screened in the programme Premieres, while Nicolas Winding Refn's “Fear X", produced by Henrik Danstrup of NWR, will have its world premiere in the World Cinema's feature film programme, as will Susanne Bier's “Open Hearts", produced by Vibeke Windeløv of Zentropa.

World Cinema have also selected “Song for a Raggy Boy", directed by Aisling Walsh, an Irish-British-Danish-Spanish multi-lateral co-production produced by Subotica Entertainment, Ireland and Michael Lunderskov of MovieFan, Denmark.

World Cinema's documentary programme have selected Jesper Jargil's film “The Purified" – about the Dogme-Brethren – as well as Jørgen Leth's “New Scenes from America" produced by Marianne Christensen and Mette Heide for Sunset and Angel.

All the above films have been allocated DFI production support through the consultant scheme.

Furthermore, Sundance have invited the animation film “Araki – The Killing of a Japanese Photographer" by Anders Morgenthaler – his graduation film from the National Film School of Denmark – to participate in the international short film programme.

The Sundance Film Festival, founded by Robert Redford in 1984, is world-renowned as a showcase for the best in new independent cinema. This year, over 2000 feature films were submitted to the festival programmers with approximately 40 international films making it to the final selection. The festival organizes a competition programme for feature films as well as documentary films, however, these are exclusively for US produced films.

This is the first time five Danish films have been selected in the same year at Sundance. Only three Danish films have been chosen at former Sundance Film Festivals: Ole Bornedal and Thura Film's “Nightwatch" participated in 1995, Jacob Grønlykke and ASA Film's “Heart of Light" in 1999, and  Jessica Nilsson and the DFI Film Workshop-Zentropa produced short film “Spotless" was selected in 2001.

“It's All About Love" will be released 10 January 2003 and “Fear X" 28 March 2003. “Open Hearts", which opened in September 2002, was hailed by national as well as international critics and recently passed the half million mark in the box office admissions, which is some ten percent of the population.

*Quiet in Hollywood fread it all HERE

If a major star like Michael Caine, with a shot at Best Actor, has so much trouble persuading a Hollywood studio to release a film that criticizes US foreign policy of a half-century ago, what is happening to other films that somebody might consider unpatriotic or anti-American? We already know about another completed film now regarded as a problem: Buffalo Soldiers, an antimilitary satire about the US Army in Germany in 1989, which one critic said "makes M*A*S*H look like a recruitment video." That's another one that Miramax acquired before 9/11 and then put on hold. Miramax told the Times it planned to release the film in March with a new voiceover by Joaquin Phoenix, but events in Iraq could change those plans.

->The ability to get a proper release has also haunted the film makers behind two other postponed movies, Buffalo Soldiers and The Grey Zone, a Holocaust drama. Both had premieres at last year's Toronto festival to positive reaction. Buffalo Soldiers was released in Germany under the title Army Go Home, but it will not be released in the US until next year. The Grey Zone, however, opened in the US on limited release. Buffalo Soldiers, from the Australian writer and director Gregor Jordan, is a rambunctious military comedy, which, according to one critic, "makes M*A*S*H look like a recruitment video". The film stars Scott Glenn as a Vietnam vet who, in 1989, cleans up a thriving black market in West Germany run by an army private (Joaquin Phoenix). Distributors chased the movie after its first screening; Miramax grabbed it on September 10. The next day, the cynical farce was on indefinite hold. "It's not that easy to release post-9/11," Jordan says. "Before 9/11, the world was a safer and happier place where people were not thinking about war. Now, they're thinking about it every day. The film says that the American Army and armies around the world are full of psychopaths whose aim is to go out and kill people." While America prepares for a possible war against Iraq, movie goers could easily read that message as unpatriotic. "It's not anti-patriotic," Jordan says. "It asks the question: why do people want to keep killing each other? A big section of the world community is asking these questions. I think cinema audiences are getting a bit frustrated with the overwhelming political correct-ness going on." Miramax executives said the satire would open in the US in March with a new voice-over by Phoenix that makes clear that the events depicted are based on fact. "It is tough and anti-military," Weinstein says, "but even if we go to war with Iraq, enough is enough. We'll open it, no matter what."

->As usual, the lineup for January's Sundance Film Festival is star-
heavy, reflecting both the eagerness of Hollywood players to stretch
in indie films and the difficulty of getting indie films financed and
shot without big-name stars aboard. Names appearing on the marquee at
the Park City, Utah-based festival will include Mel Gibson, Al
Pacino, Dustin Hoffman, Kevin Spacey, Kirsten Dunst, Morgan Freeman,
Joaquin Phoenix, Anna Paquin, Jessica Lange, Holly Hunter, and
Penélope Cruz, according to the festival lineup announced Monday. Big
names will be behind the camera as well, with the festival featuring
the directing debuts of Salma Hayek and Matt Dillon. Read it all HERE

02-12-Joaquin in a Bollywood movie? from HERE

Gurinder announces Bride and Prejudice

After Bend It Like Beckham's mega success, Gurinder Chaddha had promised an out and out Bollywood mix as her next venture. And she seems to have stuck to her word. Gurinder has signed on Santosh Sivan as the cinematographer for her next project titled Bride & Prejudice. What's more she has managed a coup of sorts on the casting front. News is that she has convinced Aishwarya Rai to play the lead role in this film. Playing the male lead will be Hollywood star Joaquin Pheonix. Phoenix had enthralled the audience with his performances in Gladiator as the villain Caesar and more recently in Signs as Mel Gibson's brother. Three quarters of a film is casting and with Ash, Pheonix and Santosh Sivan in place and Gurinder at the helm, we have another Indo-Brit winner in Bride and Prejudice.

Joaquin Pheonix plays John
“There were three reasons to why I decided to say yes
to the part as John: the script, Thomas Vinterberg and
Claire Danes. I think John was a fantastic part, it
was a beautiful story and I really wanted to work with
Thomas and Claire. There was something in John’s
character I hadn’t found before and which I wanted to
explore – an openness and sensitivity in the
character. I’m really happy to have played John –
living his story.”

It looks like Buffalo Soldiers isn't the first JP film to be released
at an unfortunate time; he's had this problem before:

In a case of spectacularly unfortunate timing, SpaceCamp was due for
release shortly after the tragic Challenger explosion. 20th Century
Fox pushed the release date forward several months, but it wasn't
enough. SpaceCamp barely got off the ground, but it did influence a
generation of young space junkies and astro-wannabes to hound their
parents for a trip to the real Space Camp.

A part out of the article

So what happened to the Polish Brothers? It seems that they were quite set on hiring Kyle MacLachlan for the starring role, and the studio was dead set against it. They refused to budge, and now find themselves unemployed.

Other actors have been approached about other roles, including James Woods, Joaquin Phoenix and Patricia Neal, although no casting will be solid until a new director is found.

ZAC POSEN has come of age. The American designer who has been the
hottest name on all fashion lips since debuting at New York Fashion

his virginity at last. "I have been saving myself," he tells Cindy
Adams of the New York Post. "Until now I was a 21-year-old virgin.
But I just lost my virginity. In Milan. This gorgeous guy climbed up
the outside of my hotel, so of course I had to sleep with him." Of
course. Posen, who claims to have lost five pounds because he has
been working so hard, celebrated his new status, and his 22nd

PETA poster-children Joaquin Phoenix and Natalie Portman avoiding the foie gras, tuna, quail, beef tenderloin, lamb chops, and filet mignon being served at celebutante designer Zac Posen's recent 22nd-birthday bash at the Old Homestead steakhouse and opting for veggie quesadillas and various non-meat finger food instead. . . . The next night, Julian Schnabel was in and said he'd like to paint a portrait of Annabelle the Cow -- the bovine statue perched atop the restaurant -- for a possible Atlantic City Homestead. . . . Janet Jackson and Missy Elliott waiting in SUVs outside Lotus for 40 minutes as their bodyguards checked out the O-Town record-release party. Buffalo Soldiers Disappointing Box Office in Germany

Odeon lowers year-end forecast
Nov. 14, 2002

COLOGNE, Germany -- The disappointing boxoffice
performance of the English-language military drama
"Buffalo Soldiers" has shot down year-end forecasts at
the film's German production company, Odeon Film.
Odeon said Wednesday the roughly €200,000 ($200,000)
the film has earned in Germany since its Oct. 31
release is well below expectations. The Gregor
Jordan-directed "Buffalo," which in Germany was
released under the title "Army Go Home!," stars
Joaquin Phoenix as a bored supply U.S. army clerk
stationed in Germany in 1989 who deals in drugs and
black market goods with his fellow soldiers and the
local populace. Odeon said the "difficult state of the
film licensing market" has led it to revalue its film
rights library, resulting in a book loss of €8 million
($8 million). As a result, Odeon says it expects to
post a "substantial loss" this year. The company's
stock fell 12% Wednesday, closing at €2.42 ($2.42).

Tofu Life Vegetarian!

Picture caption: That fish is glaring at me!

Article: He's a vegetarian and doesn't eat meat or fish at all. Leather clothes are also no good. For that reason, when he came to Japan for "Signs" vegetables played an important role in his diet. In the restaurant he ordered asparagus, eggplant, green peppers, gingko nuts, shiitake mushrooms, hackberries, etc. He was impressed by how delicious the asparagus was! Dead fish were his weak point; when he by chance looked at one he said: "That fish is glaring at me..." and looked nervous. He really likes tofu. "In Japan I can eat tofu anywhere!" he thought, but he was disappointed when the tofu in the restaurant was sold out. But the next morning for breakfast he forcefully ordered his long-cherished tofu from room service.

He loves music, alcohol and cigarettes.

"Joaquin's hobby is music. He plays music in a band with friends. When he came to Japan he was carrying a guitar case. When he opened it there was an accoustic guitar inside which he played. He likes the Beatles, Marvin Gaye and so on. He likes 60's and 70's music. He is a vegetarian and you'd think he'd be health conscious, but actually he drinks alcohol. He likes Japanese alcohol too. He likes Atsukan and Masuzake. He's a heavy smoker; his favorite brand is Camel Lights."

ROUGH, DARK AND SO VERY SULTRY. LADIES, WE PRESENT JP

With his crystal blue eyes and razor-sharp bone structure, 28 year old Joaquin Phoenix is more than your average Hollywood pretty boy. This man has principles. He's a strict vegan and once caused chaos at a Prada shoot by refusing to wear leather shoes.

Brother of River, Joaquin (pronounced Wa-keen) was born in Puerto Rico to hippy parents. As a youngster he decided he wanted a more earthy name like his siblings River and Rain, so he chose Leaf. "No one could pronounce Joaquin and I used to get really embarrassed. All the other children in my family had gorgeous names and I got Joaquin - even I can't say it," he admits. It wasn't until he was 18 that he reverted to his birth name.

After his beloved brother River collapsed and died from a drug overdose on Halloween 1993, Joaquin abandoned acting for a while until he starred as Nicole Kidman's love interest in To Die For and later Inventing the Abbots, where he met Liv Tyler whom he dated for two years.

So what's the real Joaquin like? "Pretty boring. I like to spend time with my family. I do normal things like have dinner or watch movies. I'm not a social guy. I'm quiet by nature." So would we struggle to get his name right on a date? "When I go out with the ladies, I don't force them to pronounce my name. I tell them to go by the nickname of Kitten." Cute.
